In this article the possible reasons for increasing suicide rates for African Americans is studied. Evidence is presented showing that strong ties to family help protect blacks from risk of suicide. It also says that another possible correlation is that those who are of higher social standing have fewer pressures keeping them in check so they are more likely to commit suicide than those of lower social standing.

            I feel that the subject was very adequately researched as evident by the numerous sources used. Each possible reason is visited in depth with multiple evidences offered. The fact that strong family support helps to maintain stability and decreases risk of suicide is true not only of the black community. I would have liked to have seen issues more specific to the black community listed versus issues across races since the article was specifically looking at blacks.

            This article is a little outdated, as in a lot of the information is from the 80s and 90s. The novel that I will be looking at is from the 90s so the information will tie in well with the novel but will be a little out dated for our current time. I do plan to incorporate some of the information I read in the article into my paper.
