Margot Lee Shetterly

  • Born on April 6th, 1969
  • From Hampton, Virginia
  • Graduated from University of Virginia
  • Her father, was a research scientist at NASA-Langley Research Center.
  • In 2013, she founded The Human Computer Project, an organization dedicated to archiving the work of women computers and mathematicians during the early days of NASA and NACA.

 

Katherine Johnson

  • Born on August 26, 1918
  • From White Sulphur Springs, WV
  • Education: B.S., Mathematics and French, West Virginia State College, 1937
  • Hired by NACA: June 1953
  • Retired from NASA: 1986
  • Accomplishments: She worked on the Soviet Satellite Sputnik and US space race. She also worked on the trajectories for Shepard’s Mercury flight, America’s first manned spaceflight, and she was also a huge asset to the landing and return of Apollo 13.  
  • Awards: Katherine was then presented with the Presidential Medal of Freedom, along with other rewards, including, Honorary Doctor of Laws, the West Virginia State College Outstanding Alumnus of the Year, an Honorary Doctor of Science by the Capitol College, Laurel, Maryland, an Honorary Doctorate of Science from Old Dominion University, a NASA Silver Snoopy award, and the Astronomical Society of the Pacific’s Arthur B.C. Walker II Award.
